Mason Greenwood: Ex-Manchester United footballer avoids jail over attempted rape and assault charges
Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and assault by penetration after an investigation was launched in January 2022.
The 21-year-old had denied the charges and was due to stand trial in November but the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) discontinued the case on Thursday (8 September).
In a statement, the CPS said: "We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review. This includes considering new information that may come to light. Based on the information available at this time, we have concluded that there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction in this case. We will always keep cases under review as new evidence comes to light."
Greater Manchester Police said: "Following a review of the evidence, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has today discontinued all charges against Mason Greenwood. The decision has been made by the CPS independently of Greater Manchester Police. GMP respects the decision of the CPS and we remind all victims of sexual offences that we have specially trained officers offering support."
Greenwood is still employed by Manchester United but is not expected to play for the club until the conclusion of the legal process.
The club said in a statement: "Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service to discontinue all charges against Mason Greenwood. The club will now conduct its own internal process before determining next steps. We remain committed to supporting the victims of violence of any kind."
Greenwood is one of the most promising young players in English football. He made his debut for Manchester United in 2019 and has since scored 35 goals in 129 appearances.
